Singapore Chinese Orchestra... goes Pop!

chinese orchestra has always been in my blood,
my dad plays the erhu and flute,
my mum plays the pipa,
and of course in the early courting days
my dad pretended to learn the pipa from my mum
just to spend time with her :)

i think this performance made my parents very very happy :)

Photobucket

i was given the chance to perform with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra,
and one of my original songs 心型空洞 was arranged by Tan Kah Yong, in full-blown Chinese Orchestra style!!!

Photobucket
Kah Yong and his wife caught in the audience :)
It was great working with him the 1st time, and I was thrilled by the sound of my own song :)

Photobucket
with Quek Ling Kiong the conductor... he is awesommmee!
Super nice, with such flair and style in conducting

Photobucket
during rehearsals :)

Photobucket
i also played the erhu on the traditional piece called 赛马
(playing in front of the full-time pros is no joke!!)

my only regret is that this chinese orchestra version will only be available as a live fuzzy youtube one.

ps. love the 萧 solo in the interlude!!!

My song is officially A Hole in Heart Shape.
Ok, the original meaning of Heart-Shaped Hole doesn't sound terrific either.

And it is
"a popular song composed by Tay Kewei, this piece expresses the laments of the heartbroken female lead who can't bear to give up her lover who has continuously let her down."

My first official introduction of my song on print!
haha

Thanks to Eriol, Nicholas Tan and many more for the lovely photos!
And to everyone who dropped by! :)

Epson's CNY Company Dinner @ Orchard Hotel

Photobucket
Julia the coordinator, Kexin on Vox, Weiling on Er hu and Ian on Keys.

When it comes to CNY,
Epson sure knows how to set themselves in the mood :)

I travelled back to the 1970s
as I found myself surrounded by demure ladies clad in cheong sams and
gentlemen donned in 上海滩 scarfs and outfits!

Yes it was Epson's Spring dinner, Shanghai Night theme!

The ballroom was living it up,
with activities bustling around every corner.
There were old school candy stalls,
even a sand art shifu conducting life demonstations of his sand masterpiece!

Of course there was Yours Truly :)
We performed 2 sets of 7 Shanghai Jazz familiar tunes;
春風它吻上了我的臉, 今天不回家, 夜上海, 可愛的玫瑰花,
得不到的爱情, 月亮代表我的心, 夜来香.

We even threw in the Festive CNY song - 迎春花!

Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year in Advance!

They are also one of the few couples who requested for an erhu jazz trio for their wedding -
we covered a fair share of erhu instrumental pieces together with jazz vocals :)

Alycia & Boon's Wedding @ St Regis

Photobucket
Daniel on guitar, Niq on percussion, Dawn on vox, Ivan on sax, Ein on keys, Xianyang on erhu, Selwyn on violin

Hei Kewei

Thank you so much for the good band you help put together for boon and I.
We went up to the band to thank them, especially for the effort they had to rehearse over the phone to assure us that the march in song was upbeat and grand enough to the parents' liking : )

We all had a great time. Please extend our regards and thanks to the entire band again

- Alycia

This is perhaps the biggest band to date so far -
a 7 piece band in the new swanky St Regis hotel!

I've long heard about the legendary St Regis hotel and have always passed the steely grand exterior wondering about the inside.
Stepping into the St Regis Ballroom on Saturday for the wedding of Alycia and Boon, it seemed like all my expectations of grandeur had sprung into life!

Photobucket

Alycia had a clear vision of what she wanted and we were happy and honoured that she had picked us for her special day.

To match the east meets west decadent fusion atmosphere of the day,
a 7 piece band comprising vocals, violin, erhu, bass guitar, keyboard, saxophone, and percussion was assembled.

A grand instrumental piece was constructed to the careful instruction of the bride to introduce both parents of the bride & groom and the couple, followed by a sexy mix of vocal and instrumental upbeat numbers like 我要你的爱, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and The Way You Look Tonight.

For to-be couples, don't be afraid to tell us what you want! We love fulfilling your requests :)

To Alycia and Boon, it was great seeing you enjoy your big day and thank you for having us! Our deepest congratulations to you :)

Wee Teck & Yanhan's Wedding @ Holiday Inn Park View

Have you caught the major blockbuster of the year?

Photobucket

Photobucket
once again, cutest shrek dedication slips customized by yourstruly!

To complete the theme of the night,
the wedding entourage also included
snippets of shrek, the movie!

The repertoire for the night
consisted of mostly romantic Chinese duets
like Ai he cheng nuo, Jin tian ni yao jia gei wo...
suited to fit the couple's likings :)

Photobucket

We also performed many songs specially dedciated
to Wee Teck and Yan han's loved ones;
Yi ren yi ban (ji lang ji bua)
to their parents for having brought them up throughout the years,
and peng you by Zhou hua jian to thank all their friends
for being part of their special day :)

Photobucket

One of the highlights of the night came
when Xian yang played the er hu, accompanied by keys
and me on vocals for the song "yue liang dai biao wo de xin".
He also performed tian mimi and
a solo er hu piece dedicated by happy audience
from the crowd - "Liang Zhu".

Congrats to you Wee Teck YanHan!

Band: Steve on Keys, Leon and Kexin on Vox and Xian Yang on erhu.
